Khí fluor (F2) còn được gọi là “mụ phù thủy hóa học”, hoạt tính hóa học của nó mạnh đến mức từ lâu các nhà hóa học đã cho rằng nó không tồn tại trong tự nhiên. Nhưng vừa qua, các nhà nghiên cứu tại Munich (Đức) đã có bằng chứng về sự tồn tại của khí fluor trong tự nhiên, nó bị “bẫy” trong một loại khoáng chất fluorit màu tím có tên là Antozonit.
Phát hiện này đã mang lại lời giải cho cuộc tranh luận kéo dài gần 200 năm về việc vì sao một loại khoáng chất được gọi là “spar thối” hoặc “fluoride thối” lại có mùi rất kinh khủng sau khi bị nghiền. Sau khi khoáng vật antozonit được chứng minh vào năm 1816 là làm cho các thợ mỏ ở Bavaria bị nôn nao, các nhà hóa học cho rằng nguyên nhân của mùi hôi thối này là một số hợp chất như I2, Cl2, ozon (O3). Năm 1891, nhà khoa học Pháp – Henri Moissan (sau này ông đoạt giải Nobel về phân lập thành công nguyên tố fluor) đã nghi ngờ mùi hôi thối này là do fluor gây ra. Tuy nhiên, nhiều nhà hóa học tại thời điểm đó lại cho rằng điều đó “không thể đúng”.

Nay các nhà khoa học tại Đại học Kỹ thuật Munich đã tìm thấy bằng chứng đầu tiên về việc fluor gây ra mùi hôi thối như trên. Sau khi lấy mẫu antozonit bên cạnh đường cao tốc ở Welsendorf, Đức, gần với khu vực khiến cho các thợ mỏ trước đây bị nôn nao, các nhà khoa học đã phân tích các mẫu cỡ hạt đậu theo phương pháp phổ cộng hưởng từ hạt nhân trạng thái rắn. Nhờ kỹ thuật này, họ đã phát hiện khí fluorbeen trong các mẫu đá mà không cần đập vỡ nó.
Đây là lần đầu tiên các nhà khoa học chứng minh được sự hiện diện của khí fluor trong tự nhiên.
Các nhà nghiên cứu cho rằng urani tự nhiên nằm bên trong khoáng vật đã phản ứng với fluoride khi nó phân hủy, tạo ra các hợp chất có khả năng kết hợp với nhau để tạo thành khí fluor, sau đó khí này bị bẫy giữ trong khoáng vật. Các cụm calci hình thành trong quá trình tạo ra màu sẫm của khoáng vật.
